Elsewhere - works made during stay-at-home times
As I’m sheltering at home, I’ve been thinking about where I could be going if things were normal. I love to travel and have been lucky enough to go many places in my life. Now, everywhere that’s not here seems exotic and worth exploring.
While looking over my collection of vintage postcards, I came across sets that once seemed a little laughable - cards commemorating very mundane places, like a city hall for a small New Hampshire town, or a highway in Tennessee. These Kodachrome pictures are prosaic yet monumental, and they serve as a jumping-off point for this series of mixed-media collages.
I’m unable to work in my studio, so I’m using the art supplies I have at hand - embroidery thread, paper, and scraps and ephemera I’ve collected over the years. These simple domestic materials underline the stay-at-home nature of these works. They line up with how I’ve been spending much of my time since the lockdown order: cooking and baking for my family, crocheting and other homely pursuits, dreaming of other places while making the most of the place I’m in.
