Heather Robinson

Like a lot of artists, I don’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t doing something creative in my free hours. My family moved long distances several times during my childhood; art gave me a sense of identity that I could carry with me wherever I went.

I studied architecture in school, which gave me a love of structure and a fascination with how people choose to decorate the spaces and things around them. I indiscriminately love pattern and color - if it’s decorated and brightly colored, I’m attracted to it. I adore the handmade and the accidental, and have a fondness for the imperfect - imperfection is what makes us human, and I want to celebrate the best parts of being human. When I began my art practice, I was working in collage and mixed media, but transitioned to mostly painting because I like having full control over my colors and materials. So now I call myself a painter, although you’ll still sometimes see some collage elements worked into my paintings.

Since 2007, I’ve been painting in my tiny studio in the Mission Bernal neighborhood of San Francisco. I’m a professionally-trained baker and mom to a fantastic teenager. (If you drop by my studio, I might make you something delicious in return!) I travel as often as I possibly can manage it, and study a few foreign languages so I have a greater chance of getting by when I go somewhere. In my free time, I crochet fancy lace, I collect vintage (ie loud) neckties, and I pretty much always have crazy-colored hair.
